On July 15, 2017, the historic Navy Pier celebrated its 101st birthday by debuting the newly completed Polk Bros Park Performance Lawns. Set between Chicago’s stunning lakefront and iconic skyline, the backdrops behind the lawns’ two performance stages, the Lake Stage and the City Stage, offer unparalleled views.
To accommodate the Pier’s new and comprehensive arts and culture plan, the stages needed to feature state-of-the-art sound and lighting. With a system design in place from the A/V design consultants at Threshold Acoustics, Navy Pier asked OSA to install the systems. Having produced several live events at the Pier, the team at OSA was already familiar with the space and the local in-house crew at Navy Pier.
Set in one of the most densest RF cities in the US, the venue faced RF challenges. The team elected to install a Shure ULX-D Digital Wireless System, which offers networked control and reliability so that the Polk Bros A/V crew would be able to coordinate with the many other venues within the Pier competing for wireless spectrum space, without disrupting the wireless environment already in place.
The Pier chose to utilize Harman Professional Solutions product lines to better integrate with existing BSS systems in other areas of Navy Pier. Adding in an additional BSS signal processor with Dante dedicated to the Polk Bros Performance Lawns enabled the Pier to tie into the existing system to play venue-wide announcements or background music when the stages are not in use.
