Reimagining an Opera Auditorium

for the Revival of Iconic Jesus Christ Superstar

Over the years, OSA has developed a relationship with the Lyric Opera of Chicago providing audio consultant services. Having replaced the Lyric’s speech systems in recent years with Martin Audio CDD-LIVE!, OSA was asked to supply the audio system for their production of the rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar” with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. The technology had to be carefully selected and implemented to create a “rock ‘n roll” aesthetic in the very traditional opera venue. OSA Senior Audio Engineer Peter Wiejaczka worked closely with Sound Designer Nick Lidster, of Autograph Sound out of London to create one of the best-sounding audio systems ever heard at the Lyric Opera for this iconic musical phenomenon.

DiGiCo Digital Mixing Console

SD7 Digital Mixing Console

The DiGiCo SD7 console was chosen for its input channel count, output bus count and the scene control and efficiency of the DiGiCo software, which were developed for theatre-sound applications.

Three stage racks were deployed: one for wireless microphones, one for the on stage rhythm section and one by the orchestra. All three racks were loaded to capacity!

A Behringer X32 Digital Mixing Console was implemented to handle all orchestra/conductor foldback.
