A New HQ
Headquartered Manhattan, Jesuit publisher America Media, announced plans to relocate to more modern facilities in early 2016. The new space was gutted for a complete renovation. Truephonic, consultants for Marvel Architects in broadcast systems and acoustical design, brought in OSA to bring the system design to life. The result was a 10,800 square feet modern facility suited to a 21st century media ministry.
The new HQ includes two reconfigurable conference rooms. Lights, beamforming microphone arrays and pendant speakers were installed overhead to ensure even coverage throughout. Each conference room was outfitted with a video conferencing system and a display wall. The smaller conference room has two 55″ displays side-by-side, while a two by two Planar Clarity® Matrix® LCD video wall system housed in the center of custom cabinetry is the main focus of the larger room.
The heart of the new headquarters is the newsroom — an open, collective space like newsrooms of the past equipped but with the state-of-the-art technology. At one end, a display wall featuring three LG 55″ OLED 4K screens shows real-time feeds from the broadcast studio, cable news and social media. Situated in the middle, an informal meeting space allows for huddle ups and impromptu meetings. There is a flat-screen display at one end of the table, and a camera and microphone on the table for teleconferencing. And, in addition to the cameras installed in the broadcast studio, OSA set up a Blackmagic Design URSA Broadcast camera so the staff can conduct interviews from the newsroom. The set-up includes accent lights and an Autoscript teleprompter system.
OSA also installed the A/V systems for the private offices, break room and chapel. Because the client uses Google applications for their internal workflow, one goal was to replicate the Google user experience throughout the control system. OSA’s systems designers worked to find the perfect balance of adding as much functionality desired by large events staff while creating an approachable system. The experience between the break room, newsroom and conference rooms was near identical, and a Google Chrome box was utilized in each room to replicate an experience the staff was already familiar with. Because the capabilities of Chrome boxes were limited, a Crestron system was deployed to bridge the gap, enabling control of devices the Chrome boxes were not capable of.
